Coffee was the drink of the unfaithful being a pleasing and stimulating drink. Pope Clemente VII enjoyed coffee and therefore decided that it was not so sinful after all. Appropriately, he cancelled the prohibition (he did not want to appear unfaithful), and thus allowed all Christians to enjoy this formerly condemned beverage. |
